County Match Week at Bishop’s Stortford Golf Club
County Match Week proved a real challenge to all the teams with the inclement weather disrupting the programme from the first day. On the first morning play got under way at 8.30 but was suspended because of flooded greens and the nine foursomes matches were halved. The green staff worked miracles in clearing the greens of surface water and the singles matches got under way at 12.00 noon.
Cambs and Hunts Ladies faced last year’s winners Essex in their first match. Although Sarah Peeke-Vout (Girton) and Laura Todd (Ely City) took their opponents to the 17th and 18th holes respectively Essex won all six singles matches to close out the match 7½-1½.
The other results on the day saw Norfolk secure an excellent 5½-3½ victory over Hertfordshire and Suffolk gained a similar victory against Bedfordshire.
On the second day Cambs and Hunts played Norfolk. In the top foursomes match Marcella Tuttle and Caroline Bird (The Links) put up a tremendous battle but just lost out finishing one down. The second pair of Sarah Greenall and Jackie Ewing (The Links) played some excellent golf to win their match 3 & 1. Tina Broadley (Ely City) and Sarah Peeke-Vout (Girton) found their opponents in good form and lost out 7 & 5.
In the afternoon singles the Norfolk players put in a tremendous performance to win all six matches to gain a match score of 8-1.
Other results on the day were Hertfordshire beat Bedfordshire 7½-1½ and Suffolk beat Essex 6-3.
Suffolk were our opponents on the third day. They were in buoyant mood after victories on the first two days and romped away with the three foursomes matches.
In the afternoon singles Marcella Tuttle (The Links) fought valiantly for a 4 & 2 victory and daughter Claire Tuttle (The Links), making her 1st team debut, battled hard for a 3 & 2 win. The match result was 7-2 to Suffolk.
Other results on the day were Hertfordshire beat Essex 5-4 and Norfolk beat Bedfordshire 7-2.
On Thursday torrential overnight rain caused the suspension of the morning foursomes. Our opponents were Bedfordshire and with the improving weather the singles matches got under way in the late morning. In the top singles Sarah Greenall (The Links) put up a tremendous fight but just lost out finishing one down. Marcella Tuttle (The Links) battled her way to a hard fought 5 & 3 victory over the experienced Sally Shayler. In the final singles Jade Guest (Gogs), making her first appearance in this year’s competition put in a great performance and ran out a winner by 4 & 2. The match result was a 4-2 victory for Bedfordshire.
Other results on the day were Suffolk and Hertfordshire drew 3-3 and Essex defeated Norfolk 4-2.
On the final day Cambs and Hunts faced Hertfordshire, who took a 3-0 lead after the morning foursomes.
In the afternoon singles Cambs and Hunts put up a determined fight but lost three matches on the 18th hole, with Jade Guest (Gogs) the only player to win her match. The match result was an 8-1 win for Hertfordshire.
The other results on the day saw Bedfordshire beat Essex 5½-3½. In the Championship decider between Norfolk and Suffolk, Norfolk took a 2½-½ lead after the morning foursomes. Suffolk fought hard in the afternoon and won 3½ of the singles games but lost the match 5-4. Norfolk were crowned the East Region Champions and go forward to the National Championships in September.
Final results were 1st Norfolk 4 pts (27½ games), 2nd Hertfordshire 3½ pts (27 games),
3rd Suffolk 3½ pts (25½ games), 4th Essex 2 pts (22 games), 5th Bedfordshire 2 pts (16½ games) 6th Cambs and Hunts 0 pts (7½ games)
