2016 Junior County Match Days Report

Junior County Match Days at The Cambridgeshire Golf Club – Great Performance from the Cambs and Hunts Girls.

In the Junior County Match Days held at The Cambridgeshire Golf Club, Cambs and Hunts faced tough opposition from Bedfordshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. The format of the competition was six singles games with the players playing in handicap order against each of the other counties. All the Cambs and Hunts players put in fantastic performances to produce a great result in coming third for the second year running.

On the first day Cambs and Hunts faced Essex. This was a very evenly contested match. Cambs and Hunts lost the top two games, but Junior Captain Chloe Ashman (Ely City) fought hard for a 1 up victory and Emily Smith levelled the scores when she secured a 3 & 2 victory. Essex went into the lead when they won the fifth match but Cambs and Hunts Ella Mason (Ely City) played an excellent game to secure a 5 & 4 win to halve the match 3 all.

Other results were Bedfordshire beat Suffolk 3½ – 2½ and Norfolk beat Hertfordshire 4-2

On the Tuesday morning the opponents were Norfolk who fielded an extremely strong team and although the Cambs and Hunts girls put in solid performances they lost out by 5½ – ½ with Chloe Neal (St Neots) playing some stunning golf to secure the halved game.

Other scores in the morning were Suffolk and Essex drew 3 all and Hertfordshire beat Bedfordshire 6-0.

In the afternoon Cambs and Hunts got back on track with a hard fought victory over Suffolk. Although they lost the top two matches, Cambs and Hunts players responded magnificently. First Chloe Ashman (Ely City) steadied the ship with a hard fought half. This set the ball rolling and the following players produced some excellent golf with Chalani Allen (Gogs) fighting back to clinch a 2 and 1 victory and Ella Mason (Ely City) romped home with a 6 & 5 win. Debut girl Morgan Tritton (Gogs) held her nerve and played some solid golf for a 2 & 1 victory resulting in a 3½ – 2½ win for Cambs and Hunts.

Other results in the afternoon were Norfolk beat Bedfordshire 5 – 1 and Hertfordshire beat Essex 5-1.

On the Wednesday morning the opponents for Cambs and Hunts were Bedfordshire. Jade Guest found her form and produced a fine performance to run out a winner by 3 & 2. Junior Captain Chloe Ashman fought all the way to clinch a 3 & 1 victory. Bedfordshire fought back to take the next two games to level the scores. Once again Ella Mason rose to the occasion to score a resounding 6 & 4 victory and Chloe Neal rounded off a fine performance with a 5 & 3 victory to clinch the match for Cambs and Hunts by 4 & 2.

Other results in the morning were Norfolk beat Essex 5-1 and Hertfordshire beat Suffolk 4½-1½.

On Wednesday afternoon our opponents were Hertfordshire, who always provide strong opposition. Jade Guest had a real battle on her hands but she stuck to the task to record a valuable halved match.

The next three matches went to Hertfordshire before Ella Mason put in another solid performance as she fought back to edge home for a 1 up victory on the 18th hole. The final match was won by Hertfordshire to give them a 4½ 1½ victory.

Other results of the afternoon were Essex beat Bedfordshire 3½ – 2½ and Norfolk beat Suffolk 5 – 1.

The Norfolk team finished in first place for the first time with 5 points (24½ games won), with Hertfordshire in 2nd place with 4 points (22 games won), Cambs & Hunts in 3rd place with 2½ points (12½ games won), Essex in 4th place with 2 points (11½ games won), Bedfordshire in 5th place with 1 point (9 games won) and Suffolk in 6th place with ½ a point (10½ games won).
