Former Champions battle for the title
With the holder unable to defend her title Miranda and Tabitha Brain (both Gogs) both former Champions battled their way through the field at Ramsey Golf Club to challenge for the ultimate prize of County Champion.
Heavy rain the day before the event made playing conditions more difficult and this was reflected in the scores. Miranda Brain topped the qualifiers with rounds of 74 and 71 for a total of 145, followed by Tabitha Brain with a score of 156.
In the first quarter final Miranda had a comfortable 6 & 4 win against Paula Ewing (St Ives), Jackie Ewing (Links) overcame the challenge from County Captain Marcella Tuttle (Links) with a 3 & 2 victory. County Junior Ella Mason (Ely City) put in a tremendous performance to overcome the very experienced Sarah Greenall (Links) with a 4 & 3 victory. In the last quarter-final Tabitha Brain (Gogs) put in a solid performance to beat Tina Broadley (Ely City) by 4 & 3.
In the semi-final the match between Miranda Brain and Jackie Ewing was very evenly contested over the front nine holes with Miranda reaching the turn one up. After Jackie levelled the score on the 10th hole Miranda slowly applied the pressure to win the match 3 & 2. The second semi-final saw Ella Mason pitting her skills against Tabitha Brain. Ella put up a spirited challenge before going down by 4 & 3.
In the final Miranda struck first as she won the opening hole but Tabitha struck back immediately by taking the second hole. Play was of a very high standard and Miranda moved into a 3 hole lead when she won the third, fifth and eighth holes to reach the turn 3 up.
With both players producing some excellent golf the next seven holes where all halved to give Miranda victory by 3 and 2.
As well as winning the Championship Miranda Brain also won the Allen Newport trophy for the best scratch total with rounds of 74 and 71 for a total score of 145. Tabitha Brain took the runners-up trophy and the Scratch Bowl awarded for the best gross score at the Division 1 meeting and the County Championship (83-79-77 for a total 239).
