Success for the Gog Magog Ladies in the Jean Wilkinson Trophy final

Gog Magog romped to victory in the final of the Jean Wilkinson trophy final at St. Ives Golf Club. The competition consists of seven singles matches played off scratch within three different handicap bands.

In the first semi-final between Links, Newmarket, who were defending the trophy they won last year, and the Gogs, the Links got off to a strong start by winning the top two matches.  Gogs responded by winning the next two matches.  Links then regained the lead when they won the fifth match but Gogs closed out the match by winning the final two matches for a 4 – 3 victory.

In the second semi-final Royston took an early lead by winning the top three matches.  Girton then won two matches to reduce the arrears, but Royston clinched victory by winning a fourth match to take a 4 – 2 lead.  They were also up in the final match which was called in as a result had already been achieved.

In the final the top match was very evenly contested between Sally Rusted (Gogs) and Jenny Jarvis (Royston).  The match went down to the wire with Sally Rusted just edging ahead for a one hole victory.

The second match between Wilma Smith (Gogs) and Sandra Williams (Royston) was another close match with Wilma Smith edging ahead for an early lead, which she maintained to close the match out by 3 & 2.  In the third match Margaret Batley (Gogs) played some excellent golf to take a commanding lead, running out a winner by 7 & 5 against Kathy Musgrave.

In the fourth match Gogs Gill Andrews played steady golf as she went into the lead against Royston’s Pam Bonnett.  She maintained the pressure to run out a winner by 4 & 3, to clinch the match for the Gogs.  With the match won the remaining three games were called in.

After the match the Gogs Lady Captain, Chris Heath said “This is one of the highlights of my Captaincy year and I am very proud of all my team”.
